Jay C. McCray* is a talented young Navajo artist with a deep sense of the Native American past. Using the lazy stitch or lane stitch style of beading he creates one of a kind pouches in the Plains Indian tradition.
A Star Lodge pattern pouch made and beaded by Navajo Jay C. McCray using 13º seed beads in white, greasy yellow, vermillion red and sky blue is the artist's interpretation of a 19th Century Southern Plains pouch. The Star Lodge design is meant to imitate the reflective quality of stars and has been beaded onto commercially tanned buckskin using lazy or lane stitching. The pouch is decorated with a tassels of beads, steel cones, ribbon and white leather. Total length, including the tassels is about 9". The hand made pouch is beaded on one side only and has been double matted and famed in an antiqued, varnished pine frame. The ready to hang framed pouch measures 12" wide x 15-1/4" high and comes with an informational sheet by the artist on the back. Sorry, no gift wrap is available for this item. *About Jay C. McCray: Jay C. McCray is a self taught Navajo artist who describes his work as “interpretations of a tragic past.” His traditional style of beadwork and use of natural mineral staining techniques are reminiscent of 19th Centry Plains Indian art. Each meticulously crafted piece is made to honor the historic plight of American Indians.
His beadwork has won numerous awards at the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial and other western Native American craft fairs, including Best of Show at the Mesa Verde Indian Country Indian Fair and Market.
